Arthritis

Vitamin C’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects may be useful for those with Arthritis.

We know that Vitamin C is rapidly depleted during inflammation. We also know it is used up in pain, stress, aging and by the use of anti-inflammatories such as aspirin. It has been noted that arthritis are generally low in Vitamin C.

Since about 1983, animal studies have consistently showed that antioxidants could reduce the level of free radicals associated with arthritis.

Now we have human research indicating that Vitamin E works better than a placebo in controlling pain from Osteo-Arthritis. In one study, Vitamin E improved the mobility of patients and reduced their need for pain medication.

This make sense because the free radicals increase dramatically in inflammation. The antioxidants could quench these, reduce the symptoms and possibly the progress of the disease.

Cataract and Macular Degeneration

Several studies have shown Vitamin E to be protective. One of them was reported by Dr James M. Robertson of the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario.

He examined the relationship of supplements and cataract formation in 350 men and women. He divided them into 2 groups. One group of 275 cataracts, and the other did not have cataracts,

“The consumption of supplementary Vitamin C and E may reduce the risk of senile cataracts by about 50 – 70%,” says Dr Robertson.

Dr Paul F. Jacques of Brigham and Women’s Hospital published a study involving 112 patients: 77 with cataracts and 35 without cataracts. They did dietary analysis and also measured the plasma levels of Beta-Carotene.

They found those with low plasma levels of Beta-Carotene had 5 times the risk of developing cataracts compared with those who had high Beta-Carotene levels.

Vitamin C is concentrated in the eye lens at a level 30 – 50 times greater than that of the blood.

Obviously Vitamin C is extremely important to the lens of the eye? Why? Because it helps protect us from cataracts.

A group of Australian researchers gave one group of people Vitamin C and E for 5 years and gave another group a placebo. The group not on the vitamins had 80% more cataracts! Remember the antioxidants often work as a team.

According to the studies by several leading eye specialists, there is ample evidence that damage to the lens involves oxidation due to exposure to ultraviolet rays, enviromental airborne pollutants and other oxidants.

This has been the vitamin most mentioned in preventing cataracts, although Vitamin E, Beta-Carotene and the mineral Zinc also appear in the literature.

Apple Juice May Boost Memory

Fruit's Antioxidants May Fight Aging Effects And Alzheimer's Disease

Aug. 4, 2006

(WebMD) An apple (or two) a day may help keep Alzheimer’s away — and fight the effects of aging on the brain.

A new study shows drinking apple juice may improve memory by preventing the decline of an essential neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine. Neurotransmitters are chemicals released by nerve cells to transmit messages to other nerve cells.

They are critical for good memory and brain health. Previous studies have shown that increasing the amount of acetylcholine in the brain can slow the mental decline found in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

“The findings of the present study show that consumption of antioxidant-rich foods such as apples and apple juice can help reduce problems associated with memory loss,” says researcher Thomas Shea, Ph.D., director of the Center for Cellular Neurobiology & Neurodegeneration Research at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, in a news release.

Prior research has shown that supplementing animal diets with other antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, such as blueberries, spinach, and strawberries, can help slow age-related mental decline better than using dietary supplements containing purified forms of antioxidants.

Apples for Alzheimer’s?

In the study, researchers compared normal adult mice, normal “aged” mice, and special mice that were a genetic model for human Alzheimer’s. The mice were given either a normal diet, or a diet lacking in essential nutrients, for one month.

Some of the mice on the nutrient-poor diet were also given apple juice concentrate mixed in their water.

The results showed that normal adult mice and the genetically-engineered mice on normal diets had the same acetylcholine levels. In fact, the normal adults had the same acetylcholine levels regardless of diet.

However, the genetically engineered mice on the nutrient-poor diet had lower acetylcholine levels. But this drop was prevented in those given apple juice. In the aged mice on a normal diet, acetylcholine levels were lower than in the normal adult mice; and their levels were even lower if placed on the nutrient-poor diet.

But, again, this decline was prevented by the addition of apple juice to drink. The mice were also put through maze memory tests.

“It was surprising how the animals on the apple-enhanced diets actually did a superior job on the maze tests than those not on the supplemented diet,” says Shea.

The amount of apple juice the mice drank was comparable to drinking about two 8-ounce glasses of apple juice or eating two to three apples a day for humans.

Human studies looking at apple consumption are coming in the future. The study was funded by an unrestricted grant from the U.S. Apple Association and the Apple Products Research & Education Council.

Kalimah Syahadah

Wallahu a'lam.
